So I fire up
atos
, only to have forgotten how to use it. Well future-self, if this has happened again, here’s the skinny on how to use atos (Address to Symbol).

Copy
App.app
and
App.app.dSym
into a directory

in terminal, cd to that directory

Initiate
atos
with the following command

atos -arch armv7 -o 'App.app'/'App'

this will give a block prompt

paste in a symbol code from App.app (e.g. 0x00002cf8) at the block cursor and press enter

atos
will show something like
dealloc (in App) (AppController.m:28)

After my fourth month of constant hard-drive space scavenging (in both OS X and boot-camped Vista) I finally bit the bullet and initiated the oft-delayed drive upgrade. It also seemed like the least irritating time to do the similarly deferred Tiger-to-Leopard upgrade too (hitherto postponed due to space and enthusiasm scarcity).

At this point you really hope the rest of the upgrade guide is up to scratch

Everything went pretty smoothly (except for a last minute scramble to find a size 00 philips screwdriver). ExtremeTech’s Upgrade your macbook pro’s hard-drive came in very handy, with only a few deviations necessary to effect the switcheroo.

Here’s a quick list of the necessary bits and pieces I ended up using:

Macbook Pro (Rev C, circa Jan ’07)

The upgrade guide loaded on the iPhone

A new 2.5″ SATA drive (Western Digital 250Gb scorpio)

a basic 2.5″ USB enclosure to enable ad-hoc pillaging of the old drive

Tiger DVD

Vista DVD

Torx T-6 screw-driver

size 00 and size 0 phillips screwdrivers

2 x WD passport 250Gb passport drives (one with Mac & PC app installers, the other for Time Machine)

Having the guide on the iPhone proved very handy, and luckily I had a size 0 phillips screwdriver to hand (the recommended size 00 didn’t seem right for the job). Now I’m cruising along nicely with fresh Tiger/Vista installs and throwing RAW files around without a care (hard-drive rationing is like solitary confinement, it warps the mind).

Well, this is it, the first of hopefully many posts in my personal blog. Partly a belated fulfillment of a news years resolution (hint: not the most recent one), partly to facilitate some projects I’ve got in mind and partly as an attempt to improve my own writing (it’s taken 10 minutes to get this much down), this blog has been a long time in the oven.

As every decent blogger/rss-pundit will tell you, blogs work best when they have predictable posting frequencies, ‘good writing’ and well-defined topics. I can’t guarantee the first two (it’s going to be a battle, I know it), but for the latter I can at least give you (and me) an idea of topics you expect me not to post about:

international, domestic & local politics (an exemption from this rule for topics relating to projects I’m tinkering with)

my day job (I’m an IT consultant, that’s all you’re going to get)

music, movies, books etc (I’m happy to chat about these endlessly over a beer, but for the moment at least, not online)

What does that leave? Well, mostly my mysterious ‘projects’ I guess. Every IT person has their pet projects and I’m no different, but recently I’ve come to the realization that as long as I keep these secret, they will never see the light of day (i.e. I won’t even finish them). So, tempting as it is to keep these mini-masterpieces to myself until their grand unveiling (i.e. never), I’m going to try to force myself to articulate them here. Who knows, with your help I might even finish one or two.
